William And Catherine Plan To Spoil Their Kids For A Big Summer Holiday Melt The Whole World

As the school term winds down and summer officially begins, the three children of the Prince and Princess of Wales—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—are now enjoying their well-earned break until early September.

While the family remains based at their Windsor residence for the moment, it won’t be long before they embark on some much-needed downtime together.

But before retreating completely from the public eye, key royal engagements are still firmly penciled into their calendars.

Among the most notable are the upcoming French state visit, where both Prince William and Princess Catherine are expected to play a prominent role in welcoming President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron.

And, of course, the iconic Wimbledon tournament, already underway, where royal fans eagerly hope to see Catherine in the royal box—if her health allows—as her presence has become a much-loved tradition.

Post-duty destinations: where are the Wales headed next?

That’s a question royal watchers ask every summer, and true to form, the palace keeps travel plans tightly under wraps.

Still, a few safe bets emerge from tradition and royal habits.

Last summer, Princess Catherine was unable to travel abroad due to undergoing preventative chemotherapy, a fact Prince William revealed in October while explaining the couple’s absence from the Paris Olympics.

This summer, while her recovery continues quietly and away from the public eye, hopes remain high that the family will enjoy some overseas downtime—perhaps in a private European location, far from flashing cameras and prying eyes.

While any international travel remains closely guarded, two destinations are all but guaranteed: their beloved country retreat, Anmer Hall in Norfolk, and the royal summer stronghold, Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

A summer stay at Balmoral is more than just a getaway—it’s a cherished royal tradition and a powerful emotional anchor for the Wales family.

This week on A Right Royal Podcast, royal experts Andrea Kamano, Emmy Griffiths, and royal editor Emily Nash welcomed Sky News royal correspondent Rianna Mills to unpack what this summer might hold for the young royal family—and why Balmoral continues to play such a vital role in their lives.

“Balmoral is the backdrop to some of Prince William’s most formative memories,” Mills shared. “It’s where he spent countless happy summers with his family. It’s also where, tragically, he was informed of the death of his mother, Princess Diana. It’s where he found comfort, and in later years where he met and grew close to Catherine.”

She added, “There’s a real genuine affection there. It’s not just tradition—it’s personal. It’s about reconnecting with roots, stepping away from the constitutional spotlight, and just being a family.”

As for this year’s plans, Mills confirmed, “As far as we know, they’ll still be heading up for at least a week. It’s a sacred pause in their schedule.”

Though the public rarely sees what life looks like for the Wales family behind closed doors during summer, past interviews and photos have painted a warm, relatable picture—long walks in the countryside, barbecues, bike rides, and plenty of outdoor time for the children to roam freely.

Both Anmer Hall and Balmoral provide the privacy and space the royals crave—especially at a time when Catherine is continuing her recovery and the family seeks tranquility away from public pressure.

Mills drew an interesting comparison between Balmoral and Norfolk, saying, “It’s a bit like going to Anmer Hall. You can completely understand why the royals love it. You really feel like you’re a world away from London, from all the responsibilities, all the politics, and all that sort of stuff. It’s where they breathe.”

Whether or not the Wales family chooses to venture abroad later in the summer remains to be seen.

But for now, all signs point to a deeply rooted return to familiar sanctuaries—places offering emotional refuge, family bonding, and the kind of peace no royal title can buy.

For royal fans hoping to catch a glimpse of the children this summer, there may be a few moments captured during public engagements or sporting events like Wimbledon.
